What is Plasma Pen Therapy?
Plasma Therapy is a procedure delivered to improve the effects of ageing skin. We can treat many different areas of the skin:
- Hooded eyelid lift
- Crow’s feet
- Under eye bags
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines
- Nose to mouth lines
- Accordion cheek lines
- Jowl sag
- Neck lines and sagging
- Other areas on the body can be treated (please discuss this with a member of the team).
How does it work?
Using a pioneering technique, a flash of plasma is discharged onto the surface of the skin. This forces immediate contraction of loose skin tissue by thermal disruption.
This disruption will stimulate the elastin and fibroblast cells responsible for the production of collagen, which will then promote cross-linking within the skin (a form of scaffolding within the dermis).
Once thermal disruption has taken place; it will cause the excess skin to dry superficially into tiny crusts (similar to a light scabbing) and fall away naturally over a course of 5-7 days. This is what we call the healing process.
While down time is minimal and healing quite rapid; increased levels of type 3 collagen will still continue to develop and take effect over the next few weeks and even months after treatment. This means that not only do you get some immediate results; it doesn't stop there because the ageing improvement is delivered short, medium and long term!
Does it hurt?
The treatment can be uncomfortable, but not particularly painful. We do offer a numbing cream that can be applied prior to your procedure in order to reduce any discomfort, however this is entirely optional.
Do I need a consultation?
Yes, you will need a thorough consultation to determine whether or not you are suitable for this particular procedure.
There are some contraindications to the treatment; so if you suffer with any medical conditions or take medication please mention this at the consultation.
Wait until the crusts have fallen off. You may resume activities immediately after any Plasma Pen treatment, but may not look your complete best during the healing process (usually 5 to 7 days).
The formation of brown/black crusts on the skin surface will occur. Do not pick them. These crusts will fall off in a few days
For the first night or two, if you have had a facial treatment; you may wish to sleep on your back to avoid brushing your face on your pillow.
Keep your scabs/crusts moist by applying aloe vera up to three times per day. This will provide relief from any tendency to itch and expedite the healing process.
Keep the area clean using lukewarm boiled water and do not use alcohol based cleansers.
Occasional weeping at the scab site will settle.
There may be some mild swelling, especially around the eyes and periorbital region. Swelling for 1 to 5 days post-treatment is normal, but is usually of a very minor nature. Post-treatment downtime and recovery after Plasma Pen treatment is frequently shown to be superior to treatment with other devices.
The treatment may be moderately uncomfortable and sensitive depending on where you are being treated; especially eyelid procedures where the skin is at its thinnest. Our device and our super-fine probes allow technicians to work more quickly and efficiently which minimises potential discomfort for you, but this all depends on your own sensitivities and tolerances.
The treated area must not be covered with plasters, occlusive dressing, any type of makeup, mascara, creams, or any other product until the area has fully healed (except specific products we recommend and which are available from us or your technician).
After any kind of facial treatment, especially around the eyes, we recommend using aloe vera masks to prevent inflammation by soothing and reducing swelling.
Taking vitamin C supplements over the course of your healing process can give your immune system a big boost which will help you to repair. Anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine medication can also help.
Consider the use of topical anti-oxidants to fight sun damage such as a vitamin C serum. The use of citrus juice, aloe vera and soy are cited by some as good ingredients for preventing hyper-pigmentation.
Men should avoid shaving over any area that has been treated until the skin has fully healed.
Once healed, you must use a factor 50 sunscreen when outside for at least 12 weeks and you should avoid sun beds and sunbathing.
It is highly unlikely you will ever get an infection from a Plasma Pen treatment as the wound isn’t open. However, with any skin rejuvenation treatment, we are not in control of what you do when you leave. The first 12 hours is the period of risk for picking up infection, so please avoid activities where you could get the area dirty.
We recommend not exercising straight after a treatment because any heat, steam or sweat could add to the inflammation that’s already present.
